B i o g r a p h y

I studied Philosophy at the University of Hull (BA) and Interactive Multimedia Production (MSc) at the University of Huddersfield. Upon graduation, I began teaching at Huddersfield on the multimedia course which ran in the School of Computing and Mathematics. I left teaching after a short while, working in a commercial context as a multimedia programmer. I was later invited back to Huddersfield to teach multimedia programming and technology in an artistic and architectural context. It was there that I began to explore creative coding practices, along with analogue and digital technologies, and their overlaps with cultural theory and philosophy of technology.

For many years I operated across educational, artistic and commercial domains. From around 2007, I began to focus upon bringing theory and practice more closely  together. My PhD thesis explored practice as a mode of research, and responded to criticisms of practice-oriented forms of research that were emanating from more established design-research communities. I constructed a defence of artistic research that utilised process philosophy (with special reference to the post-structural variant of process thought that can be found in the work of Deleuze) as a means of positioning the artwork in primarily abductive, methodological terms.

I currently teach on the MA Animation production at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), exploring expanded forms of kinetic media, and the productive tension between loop, structure and affect which conditions historical and contemporary modes of animation. I continue to operate between theory and practice.
