"Autobiographical memory concerns events that you remember (rather than ones about which you have been told) and relates to particular events that happened at particular times and places. We are interested in your earliest memory of a specific event, not a generalised memory from the time period. Please fill in a card with a brief description of your earliest memory of this type. Then try to estimate the age you were when the event occurred." (Memory Time Line wall text) To accompany Louise K Wilson's Memory Timeline, I created a system that would allow the recording of spoken audio memories, and their playback in a gallery space. The system cycled between the playback of a randomly selected voice, and a more cacophonous crowd.
The piece has been exhibited in the UK (Welcom Trust), Barcelona (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona) and Madrid (Espacio Fundación Telefónica).
Each exhibition featured localised audio content that expanded over the course of the show (archiving and revealing the contents of the memory index cards).
